Inspired by a traditional Kenyan coffee drink known as "Kahawa Chungu".
Our freshly ground medium roast coffee is blended with Chai Spices - Cinnamon, Cardamon and cloves. Add milk to unlock these warm spices for a comforting drink this season. Works great as a Cold Brew too.
The spices are sourced directly from small holder farmers in Zanzibar, Tanzania by our friends at Burlap and Barrel.
The star ingredient is Cinnamon Verum, also known as the "True Cinnamon" which comes from the inner bark of the tree. It's subtle, sweet and more complex in flavor than the most commonly found cinnamon. This subtly sweet flavor complements the coffee without overwhelming it.
The other ingredient is clove - a spice that Zanzibar is famous for. Zanzibar has some of the oldest clove trees in the world and was once the world's largest producer of Cloves
History:
The East African coast lies on the Indian Ocean and was the center of the ancient spice trade. Traders traveling on the spice route stopped to relax by enjoying coffee mixed with spices. Today the drink is popular among locals and enjoyed black or with sugar and milk.
